Description
Winekist apple is believed to be an open pollinated seedling of Malus niedzwetzkyana developed by Dr. Niels E. Hansen at the South Dakota Experiment Station in Brookings, South Dakota during the very early 1900s and released in 1949.
Produces a good medium size apple, with brilliant red skin, sometimes turning somewhat purple. The crisp, course, juicy, tart red flesh is great for fresh eating, juicing, and cooking. The red flesh makes for a great dark pink sauce or a rich red coloring for ciders. Short storage, up to a few weeks.
Tree is naturally semi-dwarf and does well in a garden setting. The wood is pink when cut open, and the leaves have a reddish, coppery appearance. A moderately vigorous grower. Spur bearing, so can be grown as a columnar. Summer prune to maintain small size.
