The variety was introduced by Doug Scofield, known in the fig community as “Bluemalibu,” who has been responsible for introducing several noteworthy figs found in Northern California. Angelito became particularly notable after Doug repeatedly described it as one of the finest-flavored figs in his extensive collection.

The fruit is generally medium-sized with green to yellow-green skin and a richly colored red interior, placing it broadly within the Adriatic style of figs. Its real attraction, however, is flavor. Angelito is known for an unusually concentrated sweet berry profile, combining deep berry and bright fruit character with a dense, jammy texture when allowed to ripen fully. Doug's original reports described it as intensely berry-flavored while still possessing a brighter fruitiness that distinguished it from many other berry figs.

Angelito also attracted attention because its fruit quality was accompanied by promising horticultural characteristics. In Doug's Northern California conditions, the tree was reported to be highly productive, setting fruit heavily along the branches, with early ripening beginning around the first of August. He also reported excellent resistance to splitting and souring during his evaluation.

Type: Common fig (Ficus carica)
Synonyms/Associated Names: No established synonyms currently documented
Origin: Northern California, USA
Introduced By: Doug Scofield “Bluemalibu”
Fruit: Medium; green to yellow-green skin
Pulp: Red; dense and jammy when fully ripe
Flavor: Intense sweet berry with bright, complex fruit character
Eye: Closed
Breba: Not reliably documented; primarily valued for its main crop
Season: Early main crop in its Northern California growing conditions
Growth: Medium vigor; reported to be highly productive
Pollination: Not required
Commercial SKU: FIG-ANGL
Cold-Climate Notes: Angelito is a promising cultivar for northern trial because of its reputation for relatively early main-crop ripening, but we do not yet consider its Northeast performance established. California reports of early ripening are encouraging, particularly for a high-quality berry fig, but Heritage Seed Co. is evaluating our accession under Northeast Ohio conditions before making stronger claims about cold hardiness or short-season reliability. For northern in-ground growers, the most important questions will be how quickly Angelito fruits after spring growth begins and whether it can consistently mature a substantial crop before autumn temperatures bring the season to an end.
