Calycanthus floridus commonly called Carolina Allspice, or Eastern Sweetshrub, is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub native to the eastern United States. The deep red flowers are very fragrant. A showcase garden shrub for all seasons. Beautiful fragrant flowers in early summer, followed by drooping summer fruits persisting through winter, and bright yellow fall foliage making this a highly desirable multi-season native garden shrub. Butterflies feed on the nectar of blooms, and other insects feed at the flowers, especially beetles. The flowers, leaves, stems and bark are dried and used in potpourri. Also said to be used culinarily like cinnamon. Commonly used as a specimen near entranceways, patio or other living areas (where the fragrant flowers can be enjoyed), shrub borders, foundations, herb gardens and native plant areas. An excellent choice because of its adaptability to many soil, water, and light conditions. An easy to grow, low maintenance shrub, with no known pests or diseases.
