American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)

American Hazelnut, or Filbert, is an easy-to-grow native shrub that produces delicious edible nuts in late summer. Able to thrive in a wide range of conditions, Corylus Americana is an excellent choice for hedgerows or windbreaks. Its deep green leaves turn to copper reds and yellows in autumn. A unisex species, with separate male and female parts on the same branch. A single shrub will produce some nuts, but as a wind-pollinated species, more than one are recommended for optimal nut production. An excellent pollen source for bees in early spring, and hosts numerous caterpillars including Polyphemus and Io moths.
