Ficus carica 'Celeste'

Celeste Fig

Celeste is one of the classic figs of the American South and one of the most useful traditional cultivars for growers in colder climates. Sometimes called the Sugar Fig, Celeste has been grown in the United States for generations and is valued for its reliability, productivity, sweet flavor, and relatively early ripening season.

The fruit is small to medium-sized with violet-brown to bronze skin and a soft pink to amber interior. Its flavor is intensely sweet and pleasantly figgy, with the rich sugar and honey character that gave rise to the Sugar Fig name. The fruit has a relatively tight eye, an especially useful characteristic in humid climates where figs with large, open eyes can be more susceptible to spoilage.

Celeste is not a giant-fruited collector fig, and that's part of its appeal. It is a practical, productive cultivar that has remained popular because it simply performs. The tree is vigorous and well suited to both containers and in-ground culture where winters permit.

For northern growers, Celeste's greatest advantage is earliness. At Heritage Seed Co. in Northeast Ohio, it has been among our earlier main-crop figs, typically finishing much of its crop by late August to early September. That gives it a meaningful advantage over excellent but later cultivars that may carry substantial unripe fruit into autumn.

Celeste also has a long American cultivation history, particularly across the Gulf South, making it an excellent choice for gardeners interested in both heirloom fruit and dependable production.

Cold-Climate Notes: One of the more useful traditional figs for short-season climates because of its relatively early main crop. In our Northeast Ohio collection, Celeste typically ripens substantially earlier than many mid- and late-season cultivars, with much of the crop finishing by late August or early September. This combination of earliness, productivity and a relatively tight eye makes it particularly well suited to northern and humid growing conditions.
