Fig, LSU Purple
Fig, LSU Purple
Ficus carica 'LSU Purple'
Introduced in 1991 by the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, ‘LSU Purple’ is ideal for USDA zones 7 and warmer, and is particularly suited to hot, humid areas. Fruits are medium in size and weight, with dark-purple, glossy skins and light strawberry-colored flesh with a high sugar content when ripe. Produces excellent quality fruit the first year, with quality improving as the tree ages. Mature trees (+5 years) will produce three distinct crops: a light, old wood crop in early spring (Breba crop); a heavy main crop in summer; and a fall crop that can last into December. An excellent container variety. Figs are best grown in in organically rich, well-drained soils, in full sun to part shade. Fertilize in early spring. Prune lightly in late winter to not remove the early forming spring crop. Water regularly during the growing season but reduce watering in fall. Containers must be brought indoors for winter and may be overwintered in cool, dark garages or basements. Deer resistant.
