A little woodland evergreen with year-round charm. Native to eastern North America, American wintergreen slowly forms a low carpet of glossy, dark green leaves that release the familiar wintergreen fragrance when crushed. Small, nodding white to pale pink flowers appear in summer, followed by bright red, edible berries. Cool weather brings burgundy-purple tones to the foliage, adding another layer of seasonal interest.

A lovely choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and plantings beneath shrubs and trees, wintergreen thrives in acidic, organically rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. Pair it with blueberries, ferns, and other plants that enjoy similar conditions.
